Myanmar is one of the most unique places to take a vacation. Until recently, it has not been a popular tourist destination. That was partly due to the political atmosphere. Luckily, all that is changing. The local political turmoil has significantly calmed down and tourism is on the rise.

That’s great news for people who want to see some of the worlds best beaches and some of the most awe inspiring Buddhist temples ever built. Below are four great attractions that you should check out when you’re in Myanmar.

Taung Kalat

This is a world famous Buddhist temple. It’s situated on the top of Mount Popa, which is a non-active volcano. This temple is not as glamorous as some of the other Buddhist temples, but it is awe-inspiring. The temple’s extreme location has become an iconic symbol of the lengths to which Buddhists will go to worship. There are guided tours that take you on a hike up the volcano and lead you to the temple at the top.

A fun feature of Taung Kalat is that it is home to beautiful, exotic birds and macaque monkeys. The monkeys are not afraid of people and many tourists enjoy taking photos with the animals.

Golden Rock

This amazing Buddhist site looks like an optical illusion. Golden Rock is a giant boulder that is perched on the edge of a cliff. It looks like it is going to tip over at any moment. The boulder has been painted and covered in gold by Buddhists over the years. That alone would be interesting, but the Golden Rock has more to offer.

On the top of the gigantic boulder is a small pagoda. There is a staircase that climbs the boulder and leads right to the pagoda. People can walk up to the top and enjoy the view of Myanmar.

The Great Dragon Pagoda

If you’re looking for extravagance, then this is the place to go. It is one of the most important places in Buddhist culture. The site is enormous. There are multiple smaller shrines, as well as the Great Dragon pagoda. The Great Dragon pagoda is huge and is covered in gold and diamonds.

Ngapali Beach

Myanmar also has some amazing beaches. Perhaps the most beautiful one is Ngapali.  It is located right on the Indian Ocean. The sands are bright white and the water is clear. The beach has become a major destination for tourists. Because of this, there are many nice hotels and restaurants in the vicinity.

Keep these destinations in mind when you are traveling to Myanmar, and you’ll be sure to find beautiful and inspiring sites.
